More Than Old Boots

Last night when my husband, Jerry, got home from work, he sat down next to me on the couch and propped his feet up on the coffee table. We were joking around about how it is past time for him to get a new pair of work boots. He was moving his toes back and forth in themand because of the way they were coming apart in the front, it looked like they had mouths. He pretended the boots were saying, "It's time to get another pair of boots!"

We laughed about it and he will be getting some new ones. But later in the evening I looked at them more closely and I saw more than a pair of old work boots. I saw love, hard work, integrity, and a commitment to provide for his family.

Jerry has been doing construction for over forty years and the physically difficult work has taken a toll not just on his shoes, but on his physical body. You could never accuse him of having "sissy hands." They are strong, calloused, and don't move as freely as they once did.

My dad was a very hard worker and in his earlier days he spent many years as farmer and dairyman. He too lived with a lot of pain, but you rarely heard him complain. Jerry is the same way. Even though I know he endures regular pain, he doesn't complain about it and only occasionally mentions it. Instead, he gets up every day and goes to work to provide so we can have the life we enjoy.

These boots, ragged though they may be, reflect a husband's love, a willingness to do whatever it takes to provide for those he loves, a father's desire to teach is sons a strong work ethic (which they now have), and a godly man seeking to walk in His Master's footsteps.

I want to challenge the married women who will read this. What do you see when your husband comes home? Do you just see the dirty clothes, the briefcase, and the paycheck, or do you see man that sometimes just needs to come home and put his dirty shoes on the coffee table and know he is loved and appreciated?
