Time to Look Forward

Do you ever find yourself longing for "the good old days?" Does your heart keep being drawn back to the past? There is a certain amount of remembering that is good, such as remembering all the good things God has done and special moments of your life. But if you struggle in the present because you can't let go of the past, you will miss out on today and all the blessings around you.

It's good to remember the ways God has moved in your life in the past, but if you continually find yourself wishing you could go back, it will hinder you fulfilling your destiny. On the other hand, you may be struggling to let go of regrets, failures or events that caused you pain or grief. Whatever it is that holds your heart and mind captive to the past needs to be put away.

Isaiah 43:18 says, "Do not call to mind the former things, or ponder the things of the past. Behold, I will do something new, Now it will spring forth; Will you not be aware of it? I will even make a roadway in the wilderness, Rivers in the desert." God is a God of new things! "Behold, the former things have come to pass, Now I declare new things; Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you." (Isaiah 42:9)

The Apostle Paul realized in order for him to move into all God had for him, he needed to forget the past. "Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet, but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead. I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 3:13-14) In a race, the goal is always ahead of you, but if you are always looking back, you may fall and you also won't reach your destination.

A car has large front windshield and a small rearview mirror for a reason. We should spend almost all the time looking forward. If we are continually looking in the rearview mirror, we will be distracted from where we are supposed to be going and may miss things along the way.

As we look forward into the future, God as placed wide open spaces in front of us. Let's focus on what's ahead instead of using the small rearview window of life to keep looking back. The future is as bright as the promises of God!
